Natural Treatments 

Natural Treatments for Common Diseases

Ayurvedic treatment of disease involves first determining which of the three body energies are overly increased, Vata (wind), Pitta (fire) or Kapha (water and earth). Assessments are also made of the sub doshas, ama (toxins), the state of the tissues (dhatus), and the channel systems. Treatment then involves reducing the increased body energies through diet and lifestyle changes along with various specialized techniques, detoxifying and removing the ama, and rebuilding the weakened tissues and channel systems. Only after the cause of the disease is determined and removed are medicinal herbs or techniques used to treat the symptoms of the disease. 


Acid indigestion/Acid reflux
    - avoid Pitta increasing foods and lifestyle
    - eat two handfuls puffed rice upon rising in the morning
    - do not over eat
    - do not under eat (no fasting)
    - shatavari powder (1/2 teaspoon, twice a day with room temp water before meals)

Acne
    - avoid Pitta increasing foods and lifestyle

Arthritis
    Arthritis should be approached considering the state of Vata, Pitta,  Kapha and ama. By considering all these we are treating the root cause of the arthritis instead of just the symptoms. Ayurveda considers arthritis to be caused by an increase of  the doshas, which disturb digestion, resulting in ama. The ama is then absorbed through the colon and gets deposited in the joints where it causes the typical stiffness and pain of arthritis. Eliminating the formation of ama and removing the ama from the joints is the general treatment. It is also important todetermine if the joint is warm or cold. If the joint feels warm, cold     should be applied. If the joint feels cold, then use heat. Many types of  arthritis are aggravated by the nightshade family of plants which includes tomatoes, potatoes, peppers and eggplant so these should be avoided. All type of arthritis can benefit from taking 1 teaspoon triphala at night with warm water  (1/2 to 1 cup of water). 

    - for Vata type arthritis (cracking, popping, dry, cold joints which are painful upon movement)
        - avoid Vata increasing foods and lifestyle
        - yogaraj guggulu tablets
        - apply mahanaryan oil to the joint and use moist heat
    - for Pitta type arthritis (inflamed, hot, swollen, joints which are painful even without movement)
        - avoid Pitta increasing foods and lifestyle
        - kaishore guggulu tablets
        - apply castor or coconut oil to the joint
        - if the joint is hot or inflamed apply an ice bag
    - for Kapha type arthritis (stiff, swollen, cold, clammy joints that feel better with movement -the pain is usually worse in the morning and as the person starts moving around the joint feels better)
        - avoid Kapha increasing foods and lifestyle
        - punarnava guggulu tablets
        - apply a paste of calamus root powder to the joint
        - when their is excess fluid in the joint apply a paste of equal parts punarnava powder and ginger root powder to the joint

Asthma
    Vata type (dry cough and wheezing, dry mouth thirst, dry skin, attacks are usually at dawn and dusk)
    - avoid Vata increasing foods and lifestyle
    - drink sour fruit juices such as lemon or line to hydrate the tissues
    - use hot spices such as pepper, mustard, ginger, cayenne
    - ashwagandha root to strengthen lungs
    Pitta type (cough and wheezing with yellow phlegm, fever, sweating, attacks are at noon and midnight)
    - avoid Pitta increasing foods and lifestyle
    - use cooling herbs such as gotu kola
    Kapha type (mucus, cough and wheezing with clear or white phlegm, water in lungs, attacks are in the morning and evening)
    - avoid Kapha increasing foods and lifestyle
    - use hot spices such as pepper, mustard, ginger, cayenne

Colds
    - avoid Kapha increasing foods and lifestyle
    - Gan Mao Ling Chinese patent medicine
    - amla powder (1/4 teaspoon with room temp water 3 times per day)
    - fresh ginger root tea with honey (use cautiously in Pitta body types)

Diabetes (adult onset)
    - avoid all sugars and high glycemic index foods
    - maintain a healthy weight
    - turmeric powder for initial stages (500 mg 2 times per day)
    - gurmar powder (500 mg 2 times per day)
    - mountain yam (dioscorea)    

Dry nose
    - ghee (clarified butter) drops in nose as needed

Dry skin
    for Vata body types
    - warm sesame oil massage daily in the morning
    - 2 teaspoons ghee with food daily
      for Pitta body types
    - coconut oil massage daily in the morning
    - 1 teaspoon ghee with food daily

Eczema (dry type)
    - avoid Pitta increasing foods and lifestyle
    - apply ghee externally to eczema

Hay fever/Spring allergies
    - avoid Pitta and Kapha foods and lifestyle
    - use nasal saltwater wash daily (neti pot) with a pinch of turmeric

Headache (to one side of head)
    - breath in through nostril on opposite side of headache then out  through other nostril

Heart disease
    - for all types of heart disease and prevention Arjuna bark powder (terminalia arjuna) to strengthen the heart muscle (500 mg twice per day for 30 days)

    Angina pectoris
    - rest and relaxation
    - warm sesame oil massage to chest and back followed by heat
    - warm pool of sesame oil over heart area
    - deer horn paste (either applied to chest over heart or internally)
    Pericarditis
    - avoid Pitta increasing foods and lifestyle
    Obstructive Heart Failure
    - avoid Kapha increasing foods and lifestyle
    - reishi mushroom (ganoderma lucidum) tea to reduce "bad" cholesterol

High blood pressure
    - avoid Pitta increasing foods and lifestyle
    - relaxing breathing
    - shitali pranayama

High Cholesterol
    - avoid all types of fats
    - reishi mushroom (ganoderma lucidum) tea to reduce "bad" cholesterol

Hot feet
    - avoid Pitta increasing foods and lifestyle    
    - massage soles of feet using castor oil with metal foot massage bowl

Influenza
    - Gan Mao Ling Chinese patent medicine
    - amla powder (1/4 teaspoon with room temp water 3 times per day)
    - fresh ginger root tea with honey
    - fasting is best with only light foods and soup broth
    - avoid high protein foods such as meat or fish
    - any Yoga forward bends tend to help

Insect bites
    - apply neem seed oil topically to bite (can also be used as insect repellent)

Insomnia
    - avoid Vata increasing foods and lifestyle
Menopause symptoms
    - as a tonic
        - shatavari root powder (asparagus racemosus)
    - for hot flashes
        - nut grass (musta), coriander seed, khus

Menstrual symptoms
    - for Vata type menstrual discomfort (more pain before onset of  menstruation, lower back ache, abdominal pain, cramps,  insomnia)
        - ashwagandha, vidari, tagar (mix equal portions, take 1 tablespoon with warm water after lunch and dinner)
        - 1 tablespoon aloe vera gel with 2 pinches black pepper 3 times per day until cramps subside for Vata type cramps
        - castor oil massage to lower abdomen for Vata type cramps
    - for Pitta type menstrual discomfort (hot flashes, inflammation, irritability, burning sensation during urination, tender breasts, sensitive bladder)
        - nutgrass (musta-cyperus rotundus)
        - coconut oil massage to lower abdomen for Pitta type cramps
        - shatavari root powder (1/4 teaspoon 2 or 3 times per day)
    - for Kapha type menstrual discomfort (more pain in the later part before of menstrual period, congestion, white discharge, water retention, lethargy, drowsiness)
        - punarnava 1/2 part, manjista 1/2 part, trikatu 1/8 part (1/2 teaspoon twice a day, after lunch and dinner, with warm water)
        -massage with mustard oil and castor oil, equal parts, to lower abdomen for Kapha type cramps
    - for prevention of menstrual problems         
        - aloe gel (1 tablespoon 2 times per day the week before period)

Night sweats
    - avoid Pitta increasing foods and lifestyle

Nose bleeds
    - avoid Pitta increasing foods and lifestyle

Osteoporosis
    - 1000 mg eggshell ash with ghee daily with warm water before food (may need to combine with 600 mg magnesium and 60 mg zinc             for maximum absorption)
    - chew white sesame seeds daily (1 handful provides about 1200 mg alcium)
    - gentle exercise 5 days per week, walking is best 

Skin rash
    - avoid Pitta increasing foods and lifestyle
 
Sore throat
    - gargle every two hours with salt (preferably black salt) and turmeric powder in warm water
    - Yoga Lion pose  (extend tongue out as far as you can)

Stress reduction
    - slow, deep breathing
    - gotu kola tea (strong tea may cause slight headache)
    - reduce stressful factors
    - less TV (none is best)
    - brahmi ghee as nose drops (brahmi is similar to gotu kola)

Weight loss (to lose weight)
    - avoid Kapha increasing foods and lifestyle
    - avoid breakfast if possible
    - bitter melon is the best food for weight loss
    - hot water with 1 teaspoon old honey (over 6 months old) and 10 drops lemon juice first thing in the   morning
    - eat less
    - fast one day per week   
    - moderate exercise 5 days per week until sweating on forehead and armpits    
    - "breath of fire" - bhastrika pranayama / exhale with force, inhale passively
(avoid in high blood pressure)
    - no day sleeping
   
Weight gain (to gain weight)
    - avoid Vata increasing foods and lifestyle
    - more rest (mental and physical)
    - in bed before 10:30 p.m.
    - fresh ginger with a pinch of salt and lime juice to stimulate appetite
    - eat small, frequent meals (5 or 6 per day, 2 or 3 hours apart)
    - hingvastak powder with meals to help digestion
    - no fasting
    - alternate nostril breathing
    - have an easy lifestyle
