Your Body Type

....................................................................

All of Ayurveda is based on knowing your body type. Your body type is established at conception and generally does not change over ones lifetime. There are many different body type tests, called dosha (doe-shuh) tests, available both online and in books, but it is usually best to have an experienced Ayurvedic practitioner help you determine your body type.

When taking any test to determine your body type check the answer that applies to you most of the time, or for most of your life. Do not choose answers based on your recent history.

Most people are a combination body type and will score about equally in two categories. It is very rare to score equally in all three dosha categories.

Many people who are new to Ayurveda incorrectly determine their body type.  This may be due to the fact that most Ayurvedic body type tests include questions about how your body functions, such as your appetite and health history, along with questions about your current mental state such as insomnia or depression.  You may find that if you look at the physical and mental questions separately you will come up with a different body type indication.  Usually your mental state will follow your physical state, but there are many exceptions to this general rule.

Many people will find that their appetite, how quickly they get hungry, is a very good indicator of their body type. If you are thin and do not gain weight easily and your appetite is variable, meaning sometimes you are very hungry but other times you have no appetite, this is a strong sign you have a high amount of Vata energy in your body. A person who has a thin to medium build body and who is always hungry, meaning they could "eat a horse and have room left for a cow", is a sign of a high amount of Pitta energy. A Kapha body type usually carries a little more weight than most and
can have either a strong appetite or very little. They could usually go a long time without eating and still feel OK.

Again, it is best to consult an
experienced Ayurvedic practitioner to help you determine your body type as there are many exceptions to these general rules. For a sample body type/dosha test click on the pdf  file below.
